We the undersigned want to challenge the current model of production and consumption and build on alternative ways that are good for the planet, animals and people. We support a truly sustainable system which focuses on nutritional quality, on preservation of soil and biodiversity, on protecting farmers’ livelihoods as well as animal welfare, on reducing waste and adulteration in the food supply and on true long term solutions rather than the false quick fixes of fertilisers, pesticides and GMOs.

Genetic engineering: MEPs increase pressure on EFSA On the initiative of the Members of the European Parliament Maria Heubuch (Greens, Germany), Maria Noichl (S&D, Germany), Sirpa Pietikäinen (EPP, Finland) and Bart Staes (Greens, Belgium), a public discussion on the risk assessment of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) took place on 15 September in Brussels. The panel was composed of national experts, as well as representatives from the European Commission and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). The national experts deal with the testing of GMOs in Austria, Germany and Norway and have submitted extensive scientific comments to EFSA. MEPs summarised the results of the discussion as follows: "The experts have made it very clear that there is no scientific consensus on the safety of GMOs. The risk assessment by EFSA is based on an obsolete concept. Many risks are not assessed: for instance, there is no research available on combinatorial effects, the impact of the use of pesticides, or on possibility of uncontrolled spread and many other risks. It is particularly worrying that the researchers do not have adequate access to GMO materials for scientific purposes since GMOs are protected by patents. Therefore, critical research on the risks of GMOs is impossible." "The risk assessment procedure needs to be improved and a genuine dialogue about the scientific input from the Member States is necessary. We need to keep pesticide-resistant plants off the fields and ensure strict risk assessment for plants which were produced using new biotechnological methods. We are concerned to see that the European Commission is taking a different route. We are appalled by the letter which has been made public a few days ago. In this letter, EFSA thanks the European Commission for the remarkable task it had been assigned: to consider which parts of risk assessment could be dropped when importing genetically contaminated food and feed. Instead of strengthening the precautionary principle and improving the risk assessment, this would create significant loop holes! It would mean giving up control over what we eat and letting the governments of other countries decide. This also needs to be seen in the context of the ongoing trade negotiations with the United States and Canada which are explicitly asking for less risk assessment." De belangrijkste redenen waarom de fractie van de Groenen/EVA zich verzet tegen de teelt van genetisch gemodificeerde organismen (GGO‘s) en genetisch gemodificeerd voedsel: • GGO‘s zijn nieuwe organismen die niet meer kunnen worden tegengehouden zodra ze in de natuur zijn vrijgelaten, waar ze kunnen zorgen voor onomkeerbare genetische wijzigingen die ook de rest van onze landbouw en voedselproductie negatief kunnen beïnvloeden. • De effecten van GGO‘s op het milieu en de gezondheid zijn onvoorspelbaar. • GGO‘s worden gebruikt door agrochemische bedrijven om planten te patenteren (zoals dat ook gebeurt met industriële producten) door te stellen dat het nieuwe organismen zijn. Patenten op leven zijn niet aanvaardbaar. • Uitbreiding van het verbouwen van GGO‘s ontneemt landbouwers de controle over zaden en zorgt dat het eigendom van de rechten op GGO‘s in handen komt van een handjevol agrochemische multinationals, die daarmee tevens een aanzienlijke controle krijgen over ons systeem van voedselvoorziening. • GGO‘s zijn een versterking van een industrieel landbouwsysteem. Een dergelijk systeem is onverenigbaar met een meer duurzame benadering, die erop is gericht om de bevolking van onze planeet voedselzekerheid voor de lange termijn te kunnen bieden. • De bewoners van de Europese Unie keren zich al jaren massaal tegen de verbouw van GGO‘s en willen ze niet op hun bord. Er bestaat geen enkele rechtvaardiging voor bedrijven om te proberen GGO‘s op te dringen aan een bevolking die dat niet wil. • Genetisch gemodificeerde gewassen zijn voor landbouwers niet efficiënt omdat ze of een intensiever gebruik vergen van herbiciden, of pesticiden die zonder meer leiden tot ziekteverwekkende organismen, hetgeen kan resulteren in een nieuwe weerstand tegen die chemische middelen. De fractie van de Groenen/EVA in het Europees Parlement wil een verbod op de introductie van GGO‘s in het milieu. De fractie houdt zich al 15 jaar lang bezig met dit onderwerp en heeft zich al die tijd als enige fractie in het Europees Parlement consequent gekeerd tegen de opzettelijke introductie van GGO‘s.
