GMO: Brussels passing the buck to EU member states - U Talking to Me? debate
According to a proposal of the European Commission, the EU countries could decide on their own whether they want to import genetically modified organism (GMO) products or not. At the same time, the decision-making process for the authorisation of GMOs should be revised. The new rules will not introduce a more democratic procedure, said Green member of the European Parliament (MEP), Bart Staes, in the weekly Euranet Plus "U Talking to Me?"debate. According to Paul Brannen from the less GMO-critical British Labour Party, the proposal runs contrary to the idea of the European single market.
