Chechnya, Dagestan vs. film about Russian tsar's love affair: Media report that authorities in Chechnya and Dagestan have called on the Russian Culture Ministry to ban the distribution in their territories of the film, 'Matilda', about a love story of Russian Tsar Nicholas II and ballet dancer Matilda Kshesinskaya. The two regions' authorities say that the film "offends religious believers' feelings." (KP, MK, MT, NG)

Moscow seeks return of Russian children from Middle East conflict zones: Russia's children's rights commissioner Anna Kuznetsova said on Tuesday that there are about 350 Russian children in conflict zones in the Middle East, including Syria and Iraq. Most of the children are from Dagestan and Chechnya, she said. Kommersant reports that according to estimates, there are up to 400 Russian children in hotspots in the Middle East, adding that parents of many of them may have died. (Kommersant, MT)

Think tank names PM Medvedev, Moscow mayor Sobyanin among Putin's possible successors: PM Dmitry Medvedev and Moscow mayor Sergey Sobyanin top the rating of Putin's possible successors, compiled by the 'Petersburg Politics' Foundation. Tula governor and Putin's former bodyguard Alexei Dyumin ranks third. Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu, Federation Council speaker Valentina Matviyenko, former Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin, the Presidential Administration head Anton Vaino and his deputy Sergey Kiriyenko, as well as Duma speaker Vyacheslav Volodin and Rosneft CEO Igor Sechin are named among the top ten. Regional unemployment: The Ministry of Labour said that there are a number of regions with persistently high level of unemployment. An average unemployment rate in Russia is 5%. Meanwhile, the rate of unemployment in the North Caucasus region is quite high (Ingushetia 27%, Chechnya 14%, Dagestan 11.8%). Some Siberian regions also have a high rate of unemployment (Tyva 18.6%, Zabaikalsky krai 10.6%, Altai 9.9%). The lowest rates of unemployment (around 1%) are recorded in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Chechen lawmaker killed in Chechnya; policeman killed in Dagestan: Member of the Chechen parliament Mukhmad Askhabov has been killed in an attack on Friday in Chechnya. ISIL claims responsibility for attack on police in Dagestan: One police officer was killed and another one was wounded in an attack by two gunmen in the Dagestani town of Kaspiysk on Monday. The attackers, who used knives, have been killed by police. The Islamic State terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the attack in Kaspiysk. Press reminds that Islamic State also claimed responsibility for a 19 August attack in Surgut. In a separate incident on Monday, two militants from the so-called Khasavyurt gang have been killed in an operation in Dagestan's Khasavyurt district. Probe of attack on police in Dagestan: Reportedly, law enforcement officers have detained a resident of the Dagestani town of Kaspiysk on suspicion of involvement in Monday's attack on police in Kaspiysk. The media recalls that the Islamic State terrorist group [banned in Russia] claimed responsibility for the attack. (ii) An anti-terrorism rally is planned to be held on 3 September in Surgut (Siberia). On 19 August, seven people have been injured by a local resident with a knife in Surgut. Former senator detained over shooting in Moscow hotel: Businessman and former member of the Federation Council [representing Chechnya], Umar Dzhabrailov, was detained on Wednesday over shooting in a luxury hotel in central Moscow. According to media reports, law enforcement officers discovered bullet holes in the ceiling of the room and "white powder of an unknown substance." Dzhabrailov was released under travel restrictions.
