Anti-corruption campaign in Dagestan: A court in Makhachkala has sanctioned the arrest of chief architect of Makhachkala Magomedrasul Gitinov suspected of abuse of office. Meanwhile, law enforcement officers reportedly searched the house of Dagestan's acting prime minister Abdusamad Gamidov and the homes of his deputies Shamil Isayev and Rayudin Yusufov. Anti-corruption crackdown in Dagestan: Press reports on the detention of acting Dagestani prime minister Gamidov, acting deputy prime ministers Isayev and Yusufov, and Dagestan's former education minister Shakhov on suspicion of corruption. Earlier, law enforcement officers detained the mayor Makhachkala Musayev and the chief architect of Makhachkala Gitinov. Dagestan's acting head Vladimir Vasilyev has dismissed the region's government and appointed Anatoly Karibov as acting prime minister. RBK daily speaks of a negative reaction to the detention of ministers and the arrest of the Makhachkala mayor expressed by the former head of Dagestan Ramazan Abdulatipov. Expert Alexei Malashenko, contacted by Kommersant, says in a comment that the federal government's actions in Dagestan are aimed to lower the level of corruption in the region. Malashenko does not rule out that the events in Dagestan may become a message to elites of other republics in the North Caucasus, in particular in the run-up to the Presidential elections. RBK daily calls Dagestan one of the most corrupt Russian regions and cites expert Konstantin Kazenin as saying that an anti-corruption crackdown in Dagestan could mean the final collapse of the old governance model in the region. Arrests of Dagestani officials: A Moscow court has sanctioned the arrest of several former high-ranking officials of Dagestan, including former acting prime minister Gamidov, former acting deputy prime ministers Isayev and Yusufov and former education minister Shakhov suspected of large-scale fraud. Meanwhile, Dagestan's acting head Vladimir Vasilyev has nominated Artyom Zdunov for the post of Dagestan's prime minister. Until now, Zdunov has been economy minister of the Republic of Tatarstan. Expert Denis Sokolov, cited by RBK daily, says in a comment that the latest developments in Dagestan signify the dismantling of a clan system in Dagestan. Anti-corruption crackdown in Dagestan: Press continues to report on ongoing investigative procedures against Dagestani officials as part of efforts to 'decriminalize' the region. Reportedly, searches were conducted in offices of Dagestan's ministries and agencies. According to some sources, Dagestani officials have been banned from leaving Russia during the checks. On Wednesday, Dagestan's parliament approved the candidacy of Artyom Zdunov for the post of Dagestani prime minister. Until now, Zdunov has been economy minister of the Republic of Tatarstan. European Parliament calls for immediate release of Chechen human rights activist: In a resolution, Members of the European Parliament called for an immediate release of the head of the Chechen branch of the Memorial human rights centre Oyub Titiyev charged with 'illegal drug possession' and also urged the Russian authorities to put an end to persecution and attacks against human rights activists and journalists in Chechnya. Kommersant mentions that the resolution called on EU Member States and the European External Action Service to provide assistance to those who have fled Chechnya. (Kommersant)

More than 70 criminal cases opened in Dagestan: Russian Prosecutor General Chaika said on Saturday in Makhachkala (capital of Dagestan) that more than 70 criminal cases and 433 administrative cases had been opened in Dagestan following checks carried out by prosecutors. In an interview with 'Vesti v Subbotu' on Russia's state-run TV channel Rossiya 1, Dagestan's acting head Vasilyev stressed that the fight against corruption in the republic is supported by local residents. RBK daily reports that in experts' view, the harsh sentences handed down against former Kirov governor Nikita Belykh and former Sakhalin governor Alexander Khoroshavin, as well as the arrests of former high-ranking officials in Dagestan could be an important part of President Putin's election campaign. Special forces officer, militant killed in Dagestan operation: The National Antiterrorist Committee said on Thursday that a gang leader, who was on a federal wanted list, had been killed in an operation in Dagestan. One special forces officer was killed and several others were wounded in the clash. (Interfax)

Latvia bans entry to 49 persons included in 'Magnitsky List': The Latvian authorities have banned 49 foreign nationals included in the 'Magnitsky List' from entering the territory of Latvia. North Caucasus – unemployment: At a meeting in Grozny, the Government Commission for North Caucasus tried to find a solution to the region's acute problem - unemployment, which is twice the average Russian level.
