Experts say terrorism on the rise in North Caucasus due to IS influence: The Islamic State (IS) may be contributing to a rise in terrorist cells in the North Caucasus region, following a counterterrorist operation in Kabardino-Balkar region last night. Some 300 people were evacuated before the Special Forces entered into negotiations with the terrorists, who declined to surrender and opened fire. Six terrorists were killed; there were no casualties amongst civilians or special units.  Experts believe that new terrorist groups such as the "Caucasus Emirate" may be looking to cooperate with the Islamic State. Ukrainian filmmaker Sentsov's case: The prosecutor on Thursday asked the North Caucasus District Military Court to sentence Ukrainian film director Oleg Sentsov to 23 years imprisonment on charges of terrorism. The prosecutor asked the court to sentence Sentsov's co-defendant, Alexander Kolchenko, to 12 years imprisonment. Sentsov views the charges against him as revenge for his opposition to Crimea's incorporation into Russia. In a letter ahead of the resumption of the trial against Sentsov, the European Film Academy Board called for an immediate release of Sentsov. The letter is addressed to President Putin, Duma speaker Naryshkin, head of the FSB Bortnikov, Interior Minister Kolokoltsev and Prosecutor General Chaika. (Kommersant, Lenta.ru, MT, RBK)

Ukrainian filmmaker Sentsov sentenced to 20 years in jail for terrorism: The North Caucasus District Military Court in Rostov-on-Don on Tuesday sentenced to 20 years imprisonment Ukrainian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov on charges of terrorism. Sentsov was accused of plotting terrorist attacks in Crimea. Co-defendant Alexander Kolchenko was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment. Human rights activists consider the verdict groundless and unlawful. The conviction has provoked international condemnation. Ukrainian President Poroshenko called the Russian court's decision 'unfair' and expressed the hope that international pressure on Moscow would result in the release of [former Ukrainian pilot] Savchenko and Sentsov. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Klimkin has suggested compiling the 'Sentsov and Savchenko sanctions list' similar to the 'Magnitsky List'. Russian officials have repeatedly denied that Sentsov's case was political. Some commentators do not rule out that Sentsov could be swapped for 'Russian troops'.
