Groenen ontevreden over optreden Commissie inzake Mediawet Hongarije

Vandaag heeft het Europees Parlement de handelswijze van de Europese Commissie veroordeelt inzake de controversiële mediawet van Hongarije. Deze wet is afgelopen maandag door het Hongaarse parlement aangenomen en perkt de persvrijheid in Hongarije drastisch in. Het Europarlement wil dat de Commissie zich verder inzet om deze wet van tafel te krijgen.

"Neelie Kroes is namens de Europese Commissie te makkelijk akkoord gegaan met de te beperkte aanpassingen van de Hongaren in de wet. Er zijn cosmetische verbeteringen, maar de kern van de wet is overeind gebleven. De wet is erop gericht om de persvrijheid in te perken en dat is niet acceptabel. Fundamentele rechten worden geschonden en de Commissie moet voor die rechten opkomen. De dreiging van boetes die de Hongaarse toezichthouder nu kan uitdelen leiden tot zelfcensuur van journalisten en brengen de vrije pers in gevaar. Daarnaast zijn de bronnen van journalisten niet langer beschermd, wat nieuwsgaring beperkt."

De groene fractie wil dat de Commissie haar taak serieus neemt en nu gaat zorgen voor betere wetgeving die voor heel Europa geldt. "De Commissie zal met wetgevende voorstellen moeten komen die de media beschermt tegen dit soort uitwassen, zodat over toekomstige problemen geen onduidelijkheid meer bestaat. Berlusconi is helaas in 2009 nog net weggekomen met de voorstellen rond mediaconcentratie, maar de Hongaarse wet wordt gelukkig niet door het Parlement geaccepteerd. Wij willen niet in een Europa leven waar vrije nieuwsgaring en meningsuiting beperkt worden."

De Europese Groene Partij komt eind maart bijeen in Budapest. Daar zullen thema´s passeren als democratie en populisme. "Wij willen daar vrij kunnen spreken en journalisten moeten daar in alle vrijheid verslag van kunnen doen. De wet die de Hongaren hebben aangenomen verplicht journalisten zo´n beetje om naast hun verslag van deze bijeenkomst ook een verhaal te plaatsen met de tegenovergestelde mening omdat ze nu eenmaal gebalanceerd moeten berichten. Ik ben heel benieuwd hoe de kranten er tegen die tijd uit zien."

EP vote underlines continued concerns for pluralism and media freedom in Hungary in spite of changes

The European Parliament today adopted a resolution on the controversial Hungarian media law, criticising the law in spite of the changes that have been made. The Greens believe the law continues to endanger media freedom in Hungary, and that the amendments fail to address some of the core provisions that have effectively been designed to restrict media freedom. The law also has to be viewed in the context of wider restrictions on pluralism in Hungary. After the vote, Greens/EFA co-president Rebecca Harms said:

“The EP has today made clear that it will persevere in its efforts to ensure that fundamental EU rights, like media freedom, are upheld in all EU member states. The resolution makes clear that the new media law in Hungary remains a serious threat to media freedom, in spite of the changes agreed with the Commission.

"It is seriously regrettable that Commissioner Kroes was content to accept changes around the edges, which ignore the central problems of the law. The amendments adopted by the Hungarian authorities ignore the core provisions of the media law that will undermine media freedom in Hungary: notably, the unusually powerful, politicised media supervision authority and council, which will effectively put the media under the control of the ruling political party, with powers to impose punitive penalties on spurious grounds. The law also regulates broadcast, print and online media content on the same basis with no differentiation and requires all media to be registered. It also will fundamentally undermine the independence of the public broadcaster."

After the vote, Greens/EFA co-president Dany Cohn-Bendit said:

"This law has effectively been designed with the intention of restricting media activities in Hungary and limiting critical scrutiny of the government, as part of wider restrictions on pluralism in Hungary. This is in direct conflict with the core principles of the EU, as set out in the Treaties and the Charter of Fundamental Rights. The Commission and Council must continue to push for the complete overhaul or withdrawal of the law on this basis. The European Parliament has made clear that the Commission should not simply roll over and give in to the Hungarian government on this crucial issue.

"The Hungarian media law must also be seen as just the latest attempt to limit media freedom in Europe. It highlights the urgent need for the Commission to come forward with robust legislative proposals for upholding this core EU value."
